FINCA’s Hand Up for Haiti CampaignFebruary 19th, 2011
Filed in News

FINCA supporter and Village Banking advocate, actress Zoe Saldana (Avatar) has seen first hand how small loans are helping 8,000 hard-working Haitian women rebuild their families’ lives after last year’s devastating earthquake.

Saldana recently filmed a PSA for FINCA where she explains the importance of FINCA’s ‘Hand Up for Haiti Campaign.’

“One year after the devastating tragedy in Haiti, the need to help people get back on their feet is still tremendous,” she explains, “One way you can continue the recovery is by supporting FINCA’s Hand Up for Haiti Campaign. When the quake hit, FINCA first made sure their clients and staff were safe, then they talked with each and every client to assess how they had been impacted. The first thing they did was forgive the loans of 4,500 clients to help protect the remaining assets and enable them to restart their businesses without a debt burden. Today, FINCA is serving approximately 8,000 Haitian clients. Please give generously to the Hand Up for Haiti Campaign.”

James Cameron has revealed that he will shoot two Avatar sequels back to back, releasing them in 2014 and 2015. The director has said that the next two adventures will be an “epic journey” – and will once again star Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, reports The Independent.

Like the first movie, both films will be shot in 3D.

Cameron said: “With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at Twentieth Century Fox. Our goal is to meet and exceed the global audience’s expectations for the richness of Avatar’s’ visual world and the power of the storytelling.”

Chiefs at Twentieth Century Fox had previous said that getting Cameron to make a sequel to the most successful movie of all time was a “high priority” for the studio.

A spokesperson for Fox said: “Avatar is not only the highest-grossing movie of all time, it is a created universe based on the singular imagination and daring of James Cameron, who also raised the consciousness of people worldwide to some of the greatest issues facing our planet.

“We had no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of Avatar. This is a great day in the history of our company.”

Zoe Saldana: Her mother is her heroOctober 23rd, 2010
Filed in Articles

The ‘Avatar’ actress revealed when her father died when she was just nine years old, her mother left their New York home to take her and sisters Cisely and Marial to their birthplace in the Dominican Republic, where they could “fulfil their dreams”. She explained: “My mother is my hero. She sacrificed herself so we could study and fulfil our dreams, always advising us to uphold wholesome values, love and family.”

The 32-year-old star also admitted winning the role of Princess Neytiri in ‘Avatar’ was a dream come true, as she had always thought director James Cameron was “ingenious”. She added: “They chose me right away, the first one in the cast. I didn’t know what to expect but I was totally thrilled because I’ve always held James Cameron in great esteem. I think it’s ingenious how, even in films with spectacular special effects, he always manages to include the human side and a positive message. “Also he has brought wonderful female characters to the screen, like Linda Hamilton in ‘The Terminator’ and Sigourney Weaver in ‘Aliens’.”
