‘Avatar’ star Zoe Saldana lands Avon dealJanuary 11th, 2010
Filed in News

Zoe Saldana plays blue-skinned Neytiri in “Avatar,” which has racked up more than $1 billion worldwide. Now her natural visage is being put to good use — I’ve learned that Saldana will join cosmetics company Avon as a brand ambassador.

“She’s thrilled,” a source close to the deal tells me.

She’s also in good company. Saldana will join other stars aligned with the brand, including Fergie, Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsey, Courteney Cox-Arquette, Salma Hayek and Derek Jeter.

Reps for Saldana did not return requests for comment. An Avon rep was unavailable at press time.

With her success in the “Star Trek” update, 2009 was kind to Saldana, and she shows no signs of slowing this year: She’s poised to release several major films, including director Neil LaBute’s take on “Death at a Funeral”; the 2010 version costars Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and James Marsden.

And that aforementioned tiny art house flick “Avatar”? Saldana’s blue face in that flick won’t be going away any time soon — after four solid weeks at No. 1, it was confirmed as the second-highest-grossing film ever overseas and globally and the seventh-highest in U.S. history.

Congrats, Zoe!

Star Trek Sequel Gets 2012 Release DateJanuary 9th, 2010
Filed in News, Star Trek

The last bit of Star Trek news we reported on was star Zoe Saldana’s claim that a the sequel to the J.J. Abrams directed reboot was going to go into pre-production around this time next year (it was unclear if she meant right around Christmas 2010 or at the very start of 2011). We went straight to one of the screenwriters, Roberto Orci, who informed us that, “until there’s a script… all bets are off.”

However, don’t let that cast doubt over your hopes of a Star Trek sequel (Star Trek 2?) as we learn today from Paramount Pictures (thanks to Coming Soon) that the film is tentatively set to hit theaters on June 29th, 2012. Yup, that’s two and a half years away, coming out just a few short months before that Mayan calendar runs out. So we can all see the new Captain Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Scotty, Uhura and the rest of the crew one more time before we’re all doomed to our cities getting destroyed (if we’re to believe Roland Emmerich’s last blockbuster)…

“Avatar” Now #2 Movie of All TimeJanuary 8th, 2010
Filed in Avatar, News

Looks like James Cameron is the King of Middle Earth, too.

With $1.14 billion worldwide and counting, Avatar has now overtaken the $1.1 billion raked in by 2003′s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to become the second-highest-grossing film in history.

In fact, Avatar is going so strong that what once seemed an out-of-this-world impossibility now seems within the realm of (virtual) reality. If the 20th Century Fox movie, which screens in both 2-D and 3-D formats, keeps up its current pace, it could catch the $1.8 billion in global ticket sales tallied by the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s own Titanic.

It that wasn’t enough (and it never is in Tinseltown), Fox’s FX cable network has reportedly paid upward of $25 million for the TV rights to Avatar, which will premiere in 2012.

And that makes Cameron’s blue folk even more green.

Is ‘Avatar’ Star Zoe Saldana The New Kate Winslet?January 8th, 2010
Filed in Articles, Avatar

These days, the one word on every moviegoer’s lips is “Avatar.” With the box-office receipts soaring, the love story and special effects fueling repeat views, and Oscar-buzz building, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen since … well, the last James Cameron feature film, 1997′s “Titanic.”

In the 12 years following that movie’s release, stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have made good on their promise, racking up instant classics and awards nods with equal aplomb. On Monday, we took a hard look at whether “Avatar” star Sam Worthington could use his momentum to launch a Leo-like career. Now, it’s time to compare Cameron’s leading ladies and look at why Zoe Saldana could become the next Winslet — or why such comparisons could leave the actress feeling as blue as her “Avatar” character.
