‘Star Trek 2′ Begins Pre-Production In January 2011July 20th, 2010
Filed in News, Star Trek

The as-yet untitled Star Trek sequel – which we will continue to refer to as Star Trek 2 for now – is on course to begin filming in January 2011, according to Bruce Greenwood (aka. the original Enterprise Captain, Christopher Pike).

Greenwood will grace the screen once again in next week’s Dinner For Schmucks, but he has yet to learn about his future in the Star Trek franchise. His character played a pivotal role in director J.J. Abrams’ series reboot but is not actually a member of the classic Star Trek crew – so his return is anything but assured at this point.

What is known about Star Trek 2 at this point is that the main Star Trek cast members – Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, etc. – are all set to reprise their roles; Damon Lindelof is working on the script alongside Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci; and J.J. Abrams is still poised to direct the sequel, once he has completed work on Super 8.

Former Captain-turned-Admiral Pike could potentially become a powerful ally (or foe) of the young Captain Kirk (Pine), whose brash nature will undoubtedly lead him to continue butting heads with Starfleet authority figures in future installments. Greenwood (see below) was solid in the role and he has the support of most Star Trek fans so his return in the next film is possible.

The January start date is a good fit for the Star Trek cast and crew as well with their busy schedules. After all, Simon Pegg will probably be working on Mission: Impossible 4 this fall; Chris Pine is still prepped to play Jack Ryan in Moscow, which should begin production in the second half of 2011; and Zoe Saldana has at least another year before Avatar 2 gets underway. Scheduling production on Star Trek 2 for any time other than early 2011 may prove tricky at this point.

We should begin to find out some definite information concerning the plot of the Star Trek sequel over the upcoming months – for creativity’s sake though, let’s hope it doesn’t involve time travel this time around.

UPDATE: Trekmovie.com caught up with Star Trek producer Bryan Burk earlier this month and learned that although pre-production on the sequel could begin in January 2011, shooting on the film is scheduled for late spring/early summer of that year. That would explain Greenwood’s speculative comment.

Star Trek 2 is tentatively scheduled to arrive in theaters in the U.S. on June 29th, 2012.

Zoe Saldana on Spock Romance in Star Trek SequelApril 25th, 2010

Zoe Saldana will be hitting the big screen this weekend with the comic adaptation The Losers, after quietly appearing in last week’s Death at a Funeral. Over the past year she’s appeared in two major blockbusters Avatar and Star Trek and even though everyone loved the romance between Jake Sully and Neytiri we’re eager to find out if Uhura and Spock will eventually get it on. Saldana seems to think something might happen…

Saldana spoke with MTV about Star Trek 2, (she expects to shoot sometime later this year) and her hopes to see more of a Spock/Uhura romance the second time around. The actress wants the story to expand on the relationship they established in the first film but she’s not 100% sure if their characters can mate according to Star Trek lore.

“It would be interesting to see what they are going to do with it,” continued Saldana. “I really hope they keep [the relationship] and continue to explore it. But at the same time too — this is coming from my mother, who is a Trekkie — I could be wrong, but I thought that Vulcans only mate every seven years. So now that the planet [Vulcan] has been extinguished, it’s kind of interesting. Can Spock mate with a non-Vulcan?”

Someone out there needs to answer her question stat! For a lot of people the Spock/Uhura pairing was one of the few problems they had with JJ Abrams reboot and they thought it was played up a little too much. Personally, it was nice to see Spock getting the girl for once in his life. On the TV show, didn’t Kirk get a new lady almost every other episode? It didn’t matter is she was white, black, green, or covered with slim he got a piece. It’s Spock’s turn.

‘Star Trek’ Star Zoe Saldana Wonders: Will Spock Mate With A Non-Vulcan?April 22nd, 2010

To your parents and grandparents, the thought of Spock and Uhura getting it on is, well, icky. To the generation whose sole “Star Trek” knowledge is from J.J. Abrams’ massively successful 2009 franchise reboot, their relationship is not only realistic, but also sexy.

With Abrams currently developing a sequel, there are a lot of unanswered questions about where the Spock/Uhura relationship will go from here. When we spoke with Zoe Saldana recently, she raised some important questions that will shape the next film’s script.

“There was a huge acceptance and excitement with what J.J. and the writers — Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci — did with that twist,” said Saldana, who played the new Uhura in the film that surprised “Trek” loyalists by shifting the characters’ romantic intentions from the original series’ Captain Kirk to Zachary Quinto’s Spock. “What they did was a huge gamble — and when it worked, it worked really, really well.”

When last we checked in with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Kirk had learned of the relationship, and the alternate-reality events of the first film seemed to place their love in jeopardy. So where will Kurtzman and Orci go from here?

“It would be interesting to see what they are going to do with it,” agreed Saldana, who expects to begin work on the film toward the end of this year. “I really hope they keep [the relationship] and continue to explore it.

“But at the same time too — this is coming from my mother, who is a Trekkie — I could be wrong, but I thought that Vulcans only mate every seven years,” Saldana said, referring to Pon farr, which causes both Vulcan men and women to go into heat and forces them to essentially reproduce with their lover or die. “So now that the planet [Vulcan] has been extinguished, it’s kind of interesting. Can Spock mate with a non-Vulcan?”

At this point, the theories really became interesting. Saldana was interviewed alongside her “Death at a Funeral” and “The Losers” co-star Columbus Short, an avowed Trekkie who could no longer hold his tongue.

“His dad did,” Short said of Spock’s half-Vulcan/ half-human ancestry. “He mated with a non-Vulcan.”

“That’s true,” Saldana agreed. “But there were tons of Vulcans back then. Now, there are no Vulcans.”

“But if he mates with you [that would make more Vulcans],” Short shot back.

“Yeah, but I’m not a Vulcan,” Saldana countered. “Now there’s no Vulcan planet.”

Their discussion raised an important issue that Kurtzman, Orci and Abrams are likely grappling with at this very moment: Won’t Spock’s desire to continue the Vulcan race make him determined to find a same-species mate from the handful of scattered planet inhabitants who escaped before his home planet was destroyed? It’s hard to imagine the theme won’t be a central issue in the Spock/Uhura drama of the “Star Trek” sequel.

“His mom wasn’t a Vulcan,” Short reasoned, “But he can still mate [with a survivor and help the Vulcan population].”

“It’s OK [to consider such issues],” Saldana said to her co-star, agreeing to disagree on such geekiness until “Trek 2″ comes together. “I love it.”
