“Avatar” is yet to hit theaters, but sequel talks have swirled around. The most recent words have come out from the mouth of producer Jon Landau in an interview with French magazine Le Film, in which he hinted on the premise of “Avatar 2″ should the follow-up receive the thumbs up from the studio.
While he didn’t reveal much on what the possible sequel will be dealing with, the filmmaker did suggest that a sequel development will depend on the success of the December-released movie. “If the public likes Avatar, it’s a possibility,” he revealed as translated by Slash Film. “After all, here we are exploring the surface of the planet Pandora. The interior remains to be seen.”
During the talk, Landau also confirmed on two future projects, a manga adaptation “Battle Angel” and an underwater romance “The Dive”. “We’ll go on to Battle Angel Alita and The Dive, a love story in the middle of a dive,” he mentioned, adding that director James Cameron is also involved. “James is directing both projects.”
| Zoe Saldana on Avatar | October 2nd, 2009 |
You might not recognize Zoe Saldana in Avatar. She plays a Na’Vi, one of those big blue aliens from the planet Pandora. The affect is achieved through performance capture and all the technology director James Cameron invented to create his film.
“In the beginning, I think it was a lack of knowledge, a lack of awareness of how the technology worked,” Saldana said. “Then we worked on it for two years. We trained, we had extensive rehearsals with Jim so it takes a little time for you to get used to it. After you get used to it, it is the most amazing thing because you’re not working in a movie where you have to pause yourself and they have to light again and you have to start all over again. We would do a scene from the beginning to the end every time. As an actor, you can only be so lucky to do that.”
I would have thought that doing longer takes left more room for mistakes. I’d be wrong, because actors prefer to do it all at once. “We had this freedom. When you take away a set, when you take away the hair and the makeup, you just leave the actors working with a director and you have all day. You have all day to talk and Jim is that kind of filmmaker, director that he will stop. He will sit down with you and if it takes a three hour discussion in terms of how big a monster is this beast that we’re talking about, in order for me to adjust my levels of fear or aggressiveness, it was about going into the computers and getting all these pictures and talking extensively to us so by the time we got back on the Volume, which is what we called the set, we knew what was in our minds. It was being a child again. It was being a child again and not limiting your imagination.”
| Details on New ‘Avatar’ Trailer | October 2nd, 2009 |
Another trailer for James Cameron’s “Avatar” has been said to be coming soon. Breaking the news on the matter was Market Saw which reported that an insider has claimed there are more trailers than he can count on 2 hands and that the new trailer to be released will expose more on the story unlike the previous teaser.
The new trailer allegedly will give out “more than 3 lines of dialogue” and a heavier exposure on Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver and the Na’vi. Glimpses of future Earth, Pandora’s night life and Sam Worthington’s portrayal of Jake will also play a part in the promo video. The inside source further promised that “exclusive” content will be available on avtr.com.

| New Avatar Featurette Online | September 18th, 2009 |
Here’s a bit of excitement for a Thursday afternoon: a new featurette about the Avatar game from Ubisoft, with writer/director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau contributing at some length to the thinking behind the game and the movie. You can watch the full video below, with all its rather lovely footage of Pandora, but for those of you at work or in really, really quiet libraries, here are the important bits.
Says producer Jon Landau, “Avatar is an epic adventure fantasy set on the world of Pandora. Our hope is that through other mediums the fanbase get to explore the world of Pandora well beyond just the movie.”
Cameron noted that, “This is the first time I’ve really been involved with a game from the inception of the movie project. What they said to us was, ‘We want to make a game from inside your thematic ideas, outwards.’”

New Avatar Featurette Online
“Then the thought was, working with Ubisoft, well, wait a minute. We’re working in a game engine; you’re working in a game engine. Maybe some of the assets we’ve already generated, of which there are literally tens of thousands, are things you can use. The resounding answer back was, ‘Yeah, give us everything you’ve got’. So we basically did a download of the world to them, and it worked out beautifully. So we figured let’s build one world and create two ways of enjoying it, simultaneously: separately and in parallel.”
On a wider note, Cameron says that, “Pandora is beautiful and deadly. When you’re first introduced, the deadly part is what you see and then as you go deeper the beauty starts to unfold and you realise it’s really paradise. It’s really the Garden of Eden.”
Hmm, so by the sounds of it whatever else happens, the game will be visually pretty impressive. Also, as you’ll see if you watch the full thing, Cameron agreed to and amended extensions to Avatar’s mythology in the game, meaning that it’s all canon and part of the same world. All in all, promising stuff.
