| Zoe Saldana Learns Archery for ‘Avatar’ | November 22nd, 2009 |
Learning how to shoot arrows takes on a whole new meaning when working on a $230 million James Cameron movie.
“I learned archery. I realized then, this is proven, women have better aim than men,” Zoe Saldana told Moviefone at Monday’s ‘Star Trek’ DVD and Blu-ray Disc premiere party in Hollywood, about her time on ‘Avatar,’ which opens Dec. 18.
“I am not a feminist — yet –but it’s true. It’s really true,” Saldana said.
Saldana, who plays Neytiri, one of the blue alien Na’vi who live on the planet Pandora in Cameron’s film, also has said she took dialect training, weight-lifting and horse-riding in preparation for the film. ‘Avatar,’ a combination of live action and CGI, will be shown in 3-D and IMAX, and was shot with special cameras Cameron developed for the film.
Before ‘Avatar,’ Saldana played Uhura in May’s ‘Star Trek,’ which brought her closer to what she calls her native fan-boy community.
“What it did for me personally, because I am a geek, I am addicted to martial arts and sci-fi things and books,” Saldana said. “It sort of put me in that world. I felt like they found me, and I found them. I’m so happy. The biggest thrill for me this year was going to Comic-Con. Even though I was there for ‘Avatar,’ just to know they were so excited about ‘Star Trek’ and so happy with the outcome, made me feel so good.”

“Yeah, it’s quite a love triangle,” Saldana said. “I’m not really sure where that relationship will go in the sequel, but it will be fun to explore.”
Saldana also spoke out about getting into some more of the action pieces in the sequel as well.
“It would be a lot of fun to have more of the physical element to the character in the new film. I’d love to se her kick some butt.”
The actress also spoke about her role of Neytiri in the upcoming mega-blockbuster Avatar, which is set for release on December 18.
“This was truly a one-of-a-kind experience,” Saldana said about James Cameron’s upcoming film. “It’s so hard to prepare for something like this because I’m not playing a human, I’m playing a character that doest exist.”
She also discussed the rigorous training she had to undergo for the role as well.
“I’ve never been so exhausted in my life,” Saldana said. “It was seven months of training, excrutiating training, but it was well worth it.”

| James Cameron Created Perfect Alien In Zoe Saldana | November 11th, 2009 |
Titanic director James Cameron is convinced lusty male film fans will fall in love with Zoe Saldana as a 10-foot tall blue alien in his new movie Avatar – because he has created the perfect imaginary woman.
The pioneering moviemaker used the very latest camera technology to turn actors and actresses into fantasy beings in his alien love story – and he’s particularly pleased with the way Saldana’s character came out.
Cameron says, “Right from the beginning I said, ‘She’s got to have t–s… (and) I came up with this free-floating lion’s mane-like array of feathers, and we strategically lit and angled shots to not draw attention to her breasts, but they’re right there.
“The animation uses a a physics-based sim that takes into consideration gravity, air, movement and the momentum of her hair, her top.”
And there’s one scene in particular in which Saldana’s character, Neytiri, reveals a nipple that will excite film fans when the film eventually hits DVD – because it was deemed too revealing for a PG-13 rated film.
The director tells Playboy magazine, “We had a shot in which Neytiri falls into a specific position, and because she is lit by orange firelight, it lights up the nipples.
“That was good except we’re going for a PG-13 rating, so we wound up having to fix it.
“We’ll have to put it on the special edition DVD; it will be a collector’s item.”
