| Zoe Saldana worried about pressures of Star Trek role | May 5th, 2009 |
ACTRESS Zoe Saldana has admitted she was worried about her role as communications officer Uhura in this week’s new Star Trek film.
She said: “I would be lying to you if I said I didn’t have any concerns. I did ask myself: ‘Do I really want to take on that kind of pressure?’ and take the risk of not being well received by the fans or of becoming typecast so early in my career.
“But in talking with director J.J. Abrams, I became curious about the fact that he had been more of a Star Wars than a Star Trek fan.
“What convinced me was that he had just such a beautiful vision for the film. I figured if he was taken with these characters, I definitely didn’t want to be left out.
| Zoe Saldana Credits Mother With ‘Star Trek’ Role | May 4th, 2009 |
Actress Zoe Saldana has credited her mother with landing her a role in STAR TREK – because she never would have accepted the part without her persuasion. The 30-year-old plays Uhura in the new prequel, taking on the character made famous by Nichelle Nichols in the original sci-fi series.
But Saldana was initially fearful about signing on to the project and insists it was her mum’s enthusiasm that eventually changed her mind. She says, “My mum was absolutely ecstatic when I got the role. But when director JJ Abrams offered it I was sort of afraid of saying yes. My mother was like, ‘Zoe, are you crazy? It’s Uhura!’ She was like, ‘Oh my God – you have to do it!’”
And Saldana admits her mother’s interest in the movie carried on while she was filming the blockbuster. She adds, “She read the script and she’d call and leave these funny voicemails. She’d say, ‘Zoe, it’s Mommy. For this scene, Uhura is concerned. Please play her hard.’ She was the best acting coach, I was like, ‘Thank you, Uhura expert.’”

| Guapo Cam! Exclusive 1-1 Interview With The New Uhura, Zoe Saldana | May 4th, 2009 |
With Star Trek opening this Friday, I was pretty excited to get a chance for some 1-1 time with the beautiful female lead of the movie, Zoe Saldana. Using my secret contacts deep within the bowels of Hollywood, I was told she’s no stranger to having men show up in her hotel room with a video camera.
So how could I pass that opportunity up? Grabbing the super special Q37 Explosive Space Modulator Guapo Cam, I arrived at Zoe’s hotel room ready for action. But my contacts forgot to tell me that she does this because she likes to do interviews. D-oh! I felt silly showing up in my robe and slippers, but not wanting to waste the trip, I figured this would be a good opportunity to talk about Star Trek, and talk we did!
For ten minutes I made Zoe smile (a record for me. They usually start crying after five) as we chatted about her co-stars, her first day on set, how she got into acting, who was the biggest Trek geek on set, if Vulcans are good kissers, and her future projects like Avatar. Special bonus question, what is her favorite Spanish curse word?
All this video is missing is a tripod!
So grab a cigarette, cuz you’re in for ten minutes of Zoe action!

| New Space Superstar Zoe Saldana Compares The Visions Of ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Avatar’ | April 30th, 2009 |
Zoe Saldana is sci-fi’s newest leading lady, having scored herself the lead role in two of the most highly-anticipated, big-budget sci-fi flicks of 2009. After taking on the space frontier as Uhura in J.J. Abrams’s remake of “Star Trek,” and playing Neytiri in James Cameron’s ten-years-in-development vision “Avatar,” Saldana recently dished about what is was like to work with two of Hollywood’s most innovative filmmakers – as well as two upcoming movies that seem certain to be out of this world.
“It’s amazing for an actor to work with J.J. and Jim,” Saldana gushed. “They are similar in that they are exquisite at what they do, and they are young at heart.”
When comparing the two A-list directors, Saldana said: “J.J. has made a very important place for himself in Hollywood by being an exquisite writer. And Jim has done the same by being an amazing voyager and visionary, and a great filmmaker.”
| ‘Star Trek’ Reboot Garners Positive Reviews, Excitement From Actors | April 20th, 2009 |
As anybody with an Internet connection knows by now, J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated “Star Trek” reboot premiered in Texas this week, and those who’ve seen the film say that the franchise’s future is bright. In all the known galaxies, there is no one happier to hear this than the new crew of the USS Enterprise.
“I saw the movie and, for me, I was proud to be a part of it and to be one of the contributing factors that add up to make this whole experience,” Zachary Quinto explained recently when we spoke with him about taking on the pointy ears of Mr. Spock. “Now it’s about inviting people to come along with us, and to let people know that we really made this movie from a place of respect and from a place of celebration for what came before.”
Asked which scene in the movie was her favorite, new Uhura Zoe Saldana didn’t waste any time. “I think it’s that space dive,” she said of the high-adrenaline moment that features Kirk (Chris Pine), Sulu (John Cho) and an unlucky redshirt (is there any other kind?) parachuting out of a space shuttle above Vulcan and onto a Narada drilling-rig platform, as glimpsed in the trailer. “I keep talking about it, but [it's like] when you used to see those shows on MTV that had the most extreme sports with Dan Cortese — it’s so awesome. … J.J. took that and multiplied it times a million. Not only are these guys skydiving, it’s a space dive!
“That’s as far as I’m going to go because even just talking about it, my palms get sweaty,” Saldana laughed. “It’s the most engaging scene in my opinion, and Sulu and Kirk look so damn hot that I’m beside myself.”
